I'm not really sure how well the word 'anal' travels over the Atlantic and across the Channel, but in this context it means that you're being straight about something; doing it correctly - almost to an annoying point.
When I was little, like all little people, I used to play various games in the playground. Out of all the games I played, or made up, one type always sticks in my head - being a fire engine, police car or ambulance. Obviously the traditional thing to do when you're 6 is to run around making siren noises with your hands 'flashing' in the air for the lights on the roof - left arm for the left-hand light and right arm for the right-hand light.
However, this is where the anal part comes in, my left arm was always further away from me than my right arm. Why? No, I don't have odd-length arms, but being in Britain, we have right-hand drive cars. So when you're diving, the left light will be further away from you.
And since then I haven't really been able to drop it. Probably why I don't have a girlfriend.
The main point is, I am particularly picky about writing the English language correctly. (I don't get it right all the time and I'm always interested to know why something may be incorrect.) One of my pet-hates is 'text-speak', it annoys the hell out of me. Especially "thx" or "ty". If you are genuinely happy that somebody has done something for you, and you wish to show your appreciation, the least you can do is bother to stretch your fingers over to those letters and type out the words "thank you".
After using Vox for almost a week, I have been astonished that every single blog is well-written with real words and nothing looks like it's been written by a 12 year old. Probably because it hasn't, but even a lot of adults use text-speak when writing.
So I'd just like to say thank you, to all those people who take those extra mili-seconds to write out the whole word and make life easier for us all, without having to figure out what "l8r" means.
