This week, The Devil Wears Prada opened in cinemas in the USA. It's based on the book of the same name, and looks like quite a good film without most of the normal clichés and Hollywood stories.
There is, however, one aspect of Hollywood still left in. The release dates. Although I can watch it in most US cinemas, I have to wait until October for it to come to Britain. Four months.
So I wait four months and pay my money to see it in the cinema. I prefer to watch films in the comfort of my own home though, so maybe I should wait until it's available on DVD or shown on satellite - but that won't be until Christmas, at least.
Or I can just download it in the next week or so (or find a friend to get it, I still haven't got the hang of the whole downloading thing) and watch it at my leisure.
Just like songs through iTunes, though, I've got my credit card to hand and I'll be happy to pay £5 ($9) to download a copy with sensible (or no) digital rights and watch it tonight.
Why aren't they listening?
One of my favourite TV shows, Scrubs, is also following a similar pattern. The last series finished in the US about three months ago, and since then I've already heard what happens through reading it on the web. Yet it's only just about to start here.
There are no physical restraints. It will take under 24 hours to get it to London from LA so it can be broadcast.
My generation are growing up without paying for things. I only buy songs on iTunes because my morals are too high. Surely the studios can see an opportuntiy here, but instead they simply sue a few people who - a real help. Do they want us to download their films instead of paying for them, or what?
